Even given the fact that we lost Birchall close to 50 years ago I still think of him as one of the funniest people I have ever known. We miss you Ab.

He was a good friend of mine, although fifty years is too long for me to remember the details.  All I know is that I was crushed by the awful news of his death, and it took me quite a while to recover from it.

I was crushed about the news, also.  Ab was one of my best friends at school.  We were in the same carpool for sophomore and junior years.  Dick, I remember you made a very artistic "crAB" T-shirt for him after he saw the "Spider" (your nickname) T-shirt you had made for yourself, which he thought was cool.  You guys had the fanciest shirts in gym class!

Mike, I agree he was funny, with a sometimes self-deprecating sense of humor.  He was on the baseball team and spent a lot of time on the bench.  I would watch games from the bleachers, and he would make humorous comments to me about his lowly status.  One time he was sent out to retrieve some bats from the field and called out to me, "Hey, Bill, look!  Now I'm the batboy!"

I also remember Robert for his sense of humor. We sometimes exchanged our lunches and he loved the roast beef sandwiches my mom made for me. So naturally his comment in my yearbook was "Bill, keep the roast beef sandwiches coming and the wisecracks in English. Remember me every time you mix reagents. AB." Though I never mixed another reagent, I certainly have thought about him from time to time over the years.
